Contribute to Friends of Pakistan USA Education Fund for Girls in Pakistan

A group of us returned Peace Corps volunteers and supporters have joined together to help girls in Pakistan finish their secondary education and prepare for university or professional training. Friends of Pakistan USA is committed to the empowerment of women in Pakistan. Make a contribution in your name, someone else’s name to commemorate a birthday, wedding, or whatever you want and help a young girl in Pakistan.

This year Friends of Pakistan USA committed to a partnership with the Hoshyar Foundation, a nonprofit based in Austin, Texas, to create the first 11th and 12th grade programs for girls ever offered in the mountains of Mansehra District north of Islamabad. Adding the two grades would allow up to 40 girls to stay in their own communities while qualifying for either university entrance or for training as nurses, midwives, and health workers. The program will be housed in two girls schools already operated by Friends Welfare Association, a community-based organization begun after the 2005 earthquake.

The estimated cost per student is only $15 to $20 per month - a small investment with a very big return. At a maximum annual cost of only $150 per girl we will be able to develop a project model that can be used at any school, private or public, that meets our basic criteria for strong local leadership, community  “buy-in” and basic communications.

Our goal is to raise $10,000 by April 30, 2014.  This will provide up to 40 educational scholarships for two years for young women attending secondary school in northern Pakistan.
